VERC provides assessments, educational guides, strategy sessions, business resources, AI-focused reports, government contracting education, and global entrepreneurship resources. Our focus is practical preparation. We help clients determine where they are, where they want to go, and which steps deserve attention first.

Who does VERC serve?

VERC primarily serves veterans and retired service members, service-disabled veteran entrepreneurs, transitioning service members, military spouses and families, federal employees preparing for retirement, retired federal employees, first-time entrepreneurs, existing small-business owners, veteran-owned businesses interested in government contracting, entrepreneurs interested in AI, and veterans and retirees exploring business and life abroad. You do not need an existing business to start working with VERC.

Do I need a business idea before starting?

No. Some clients arrive with an established business. Others have several ideas and need help determining which opportunity deserves further research. Your starting point determines your recommended VERC learning path.

Is VERC part of the VA, SBA, DoD, or another government agency?

Accepted Answer

No. VERC is an independent organization. VERC is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Small Business Administration, Department of Defense, or any other federal agency. When appropriate, VERC directs clients to official government programs and resources.

I have no idea where to start. What should I do first?

Start with a readiness assessment. Instead of selecting courses based on what sounds interesting, first identify your current strengths, gaps, objectives, and immediate priorities. Your assessment helps establish a starting point and recommended learning path.

What is the Mission Readiness Assessment?

Accepted Answer

The Mission Readiness Assessment is an initial evaluation of your entrepreneurial position. The assessment examines areas such as business concept, customer definition, financial preparation, business formation, marketing, sales, technology, AI readiness, government contracting, veteran business opportunities, and business goals. The objective is simple: know where you stand before deciding where to invest your time and money.

What happens after I complete an assessment?

Your responses help the VERC Team identify priority areas and recommend appropriate resources. Depending on your situation, your next step might include an educational guide, strategy session, AI assessment, government contracting resource, business readiness review, or referral to an outside resource. VERC does not believe every client needs every product.

What is the Mission Readiness Strategy Report?

The Mission Readiness Strategy Report provides a structured assessment of your business position, priorities, opportunities, and next actions. Rather than giving you another collection of generic business information, the report helps answer: Where am I now? What am I trying to accomplish? What gaps are slowing me down? Which opportunities deserve attention? What should I work on first? The resulting strategy provides direction for your next phase.

Does VERC help people choose a business?

VERC helps clients evaluate business ideas based on factors such as experience, skills, market demand, customer needs, startup requirements, available resources, and revenue potential. The objective is not to tell you what business to start. The objective is to improve the quality of the decision.

Does VERC write business plans?

Accepted Answer

VERC resources help entrepreneurs develop the components of a business strategy and business plan. More important, VERC focuses on the decisions behind the document — including the customer, problem, solution, market, pricing, operations, revenue model, capital requirements, and execution strategy.

Does VERC work with existing businesses?

Accepted Answer

Yes. An established entrepreneur might need help with growth, AI adoption, government contracting, marketing, business systems, new revenue sources, partnerships, or strategic direction. Your recommended path should reflect the maturity of your business.

What makes VERC different from general entrepreneurship programs?

Accepted Answer

Veterans often enter entrepreneurship with significant leadership, management, logistics, technical, operational, planning, and problem-solving experience. The challenge often involves translating those capabilities into a commercial environment. VERC focuses on connecting prior experience with business opportunity, while helping entrepreneurs identify gaps requiring new knowledge or outside expertise.

Do I need to be a veteran to use VERC?

No. Veterans represent VERC's primary community, but selected resources and services also serve military spouses, federal employees, retirees, entrepreneurs, and others who find the programs relevant.

Does VERC help military spouses?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Portable and location-independent entrepreneurship presents specific opportunities for military spouses. VERC plans to expand resources focused on military spouse entrepreneurship, business continuity during relocation, remote operations, and portable income.

Does being veteran-owned guarantee government contracts?

Accepted Answer

No. Veteran ownership or certification does not guarantee contract awards. Government buyers still evaluate factors such as capability, past performance, price, requirements, competition, acquisition strategy, and procurement rules. Certification should form one part of a larger contracting strategy.

I registered in SAM.gov. What happens next?

Accepted Answer

SAM registration is an important administrative step, not a sales strategy. Your next phase generally involves identifying your target agencies and buyers, selecting relevant NAICS codes, researching contract history, developing your capability statement, understanding acquisition methods, building relationships, identifying subcontracting opportunities, and responding to suitable opportunities. Does VERC provide SBA certification?

No. The SBA controls its certification programs and makes certification decisions. VERC provides educational readiness resources designed to help businesses understand preparation, documentation, ownership, control, and related business-readiness considerations before pursuing applicable programs.

Does VERC guarantee SBA certification or government contracts?

Accepted Answer

No. VERC does not approve applications or guarantee certification outcomes. No legitimate advisor should promise a federal contract. VERC helps entrepreneurs become better prepared to identify, evaluate, and pursue appropriate opportunities.

What is the AI Growth Intelligence Report?

The AI Growth Intelligence Report examines where artificial intelligence might support your business. The assessment focuses on practical business functions such as administration, research, marketing, lead management, customer communications, sales follow-up, scheduling, proposal development, document preparation, reporting, workflow automation, and productivity. The goal is a prioritized AI strategy tied to business needs.

Do I need technical experience to use AI?

No. A business owner does not need to become a programmer to gain value from many modern AI tools. VERC approaches AI from an executive and entrepreneur perspective. Start with the business problem. Then determine whether AI belongs in the solution.

Will AI replace employees in my business?

Accepted Answer

VERC's focus is productivity and business capability. Some processes benefit from automation. Others require judgment, expertise, relationships, supervision, or human interaction. The assessment identifies where technology makes sense and where human involvement should remain central.

Will VERC recommend specific AI products?

Accepted Answer

Where appropriate, VERC resources identify tools worth evaluating based on the client's objective. Technology changes quickly, so recommendations should be reviewed against current pricing, capabilities, security, and terms before adoption.

I am a federal employee planning retirement. When should I start preparing?

Accepted Answer

Preparation should begin before separation when possible. Business research, financial planning, skill translation, ethics questions, benefits considerations, and transition planning often require more time than expected. Starting early gives you more information before making irreversible decisions.

Does VERC provide federal retirement advice?

VERC provides educational information and planning resources. VERC does not replace your agency HR office, retirement specialist, attorney, CPA, ethics official, or financial advisor. Retirement eligibility and benefits decisions should be verified with the appropriate official source.

Why does VERC connect retirement planning with entrepreneurship?

For some retirees, entrepreneurship serves several purposes. Business ownership might provide supplemental income, professional purpose, flexibility, consulting opportunities, or a path toward replacing part of former employment income. VERC focuses on evaluating those opportunities before retirement rather than assuming a pension or retirement benefit must become the client's only future income source.

Are there free grants for every veteran starting a business?

No. Veteran status does not create automatic access to startup grants. Some competitive programs, nonprofit initiatives, state programs, corporate competitions, and specialized funding opportunities exist. Eligibility and availability vary. Be cautious with anyone promising guaranteed veteran grant money.

Traditional relocation resources often focus on housing, lifestyle, healthcare, and destinations. VERC adds another question: How will you support the life you want after you move? Our country research explores entrepreneurship, residual income opportunities, local business relationships, professional resources, and potential partnerships alongside relocation education.

Does VERC provide immigration or legal advice?

No. VERC provides education and connects participants with appropriate independent professionals when specialized services are needed. Immigration, residency, real estate, taxation, business formation, and other legal matters should be handled by qualified professionals in the applicable jurisdiction.

What are VERC in-country advisors and partners?

Accepted Answer

VERC seeks relationships with qualified professionals, entrepreneurs, relocation specialists, and other knowledgeable people who have current experience in specific countries. Their role is to provide specialized local knowledge where appropriate. Clients should independently evaluate any professional before entering into an agreement.

Useful materials include your business idea or description, website, business plan, capability statement, current pricing, marketing materials, revenue goals, questions, current challenges, and list of priorities. Do not delay a session because everything is not organized. Identifying what is missing forms part of the readiness process.

Your service determines the specific deliverables. A typical VERC process follows: Assessment → Identify Gaps → Set Priorities → Select Resources → Build Action Plan → Execute → Review Progress.

What if VERC is not the right resource for my problem?

VERC will say so. Where appropriate, clients should be directed to government agencies, attorneys, CPAs, lenders, Veterans Business Outreach Centers, Small Business Development Centers, SCORE mentors, relocation professionals, or other specialized resources.

Where should I start?

Start with the VERC readiness process if you are unsure. If you already know your objective, choose the learning path associated with your immediate problem. Your first question does not need to be, "Which course should I buy?" A better question is: "What is the next decision I need to make?" That is where VERC should start.
